The University of Puerto Rico Summer Law Program in Barcelona is offered as part of the curriculum of the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. It is approved by the ABA. The Program is open to students in good standing at ABA/AALS approved law schools in Puerto Rico and the United States who have completed their first year of studies and for law students of the University of Barcelona. Since its creation in 1994 more than 700 students have participated, aprox. 600 students from the University of Puerto Rico and 100 from other ABA accredited Law Schools from Puerto Rico and the United States.

Six courses will be offered this summer. A student may enroll in courses up to a maximum of 6 credits. Participants can take courses for credit (which requires a final examination) or as auditors (with no final examination). The UPR School of Law utilizes an alpha grading system in which the actual grade earned is represented by alphabetical letter.  Grades are assigned from A to F, except for the course The Practice of Law in Europe which will be graded as Pass or Fail. No unit credit will be granted if the grade is an F or Fail.

Other law schools have regularly approved transfer and accreditation of the University of Puerto Rico School of Law credits. However, each individual law school must determine the requirements for the transferability of credits earned in this Program. Participants are responsible for approval from their own law schools to transfer credit, in compliance with residency requirements. All students are subject to the standard attendance and grading policies of the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. Students who are admitted to the Program will receive information outlining these policies. Class attendance is compulsory.  Following the Criteria for  Approval of Foreign Summer Programs of the ABA Approved Schools, no student shall be allowed to enroll in courses that meet more than 220 class minutes per day.

Cancellation Policy

Tuition and fees received are non refundable, the only exception being in the case of serious illness, which makes attendance to the program impossible. UPR School of Law retains the right to cancel the program due to unforeseen circumstances, at which time tuition payments will be refunded.

Travel

Participants must make their own travel arrangements. Passports are required to travel to Spain, and are the responsibility of each student. Visas are not required for US citizens traveling to Spain for a period of three months or less.

Liability & Insurance

UPR Law School will not be responsible for personal injuries to students, medical conditions, or for loss or damage to personal property within or in transit to or from Barcelona.  Students must acquire a travel and medical health plan that covers medical services, evacuation and repatriation. The Law School will provide students information about available health and travel insurance plans that students can acquire. Before traveling to Barcelona students must provide the Law School with a copy of their travel and medical insurance.

Accommodation

Accommodations are not provided by the Program. Students may make any housing arrangements they prefer.  It is strongly encouraged that students secure housing in Barcelona before they leave Puerto Rico or the U.S.  In the past, participants of the Program have stayed at the Saint Raimon de Penyafort dormitory. This facility is conveniently located across the street from the Faculty of Law. The rooms provide single accommodations and are cleaned daily. The facilities also include a dining hall, where all meals are served, a bar lounge, a terrace, t.v. room, and reading areas. Reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities are available upon request.  For more information visit: www.penyafort.ub.es. For other housing information visit  http://www.bcu.cat/en/accommodation-in-barcelona/
